GLOSSARY · FILING

TEAS

The USPTO's online filing system for trademarks.

The Trademark Electronic Application System. Different filing options carry different fees and requirements. The system has been progressively replaced by Trademark Center, but the term still appears throughout USPTO correspondence.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

Why it matters to your application

The filing system itself. Worth knowing mainly because the name still appears throughout USPTO correspondence even as the office moves to Trademark Center, and because the fee structure changed substantially in January 2025 - older guidance you find online frequently quotes fees that no longer exist.

WHAT TO DO

In order

  1. Expect the base government fee of $350 per class for an electronic application.
  2. Use pre-approved ID Manual wording to avoid the $200 per-class surcharge for custom descriptions.
  3. Supply all required information at filing; missing information carries its own surcharge.
  4. Treat any fee figure you find in an older article with suspicion, including the retired TEAS Plus and TEAS Standard tiers.
AN EXAMPLE

How this plays out

An applicant budgets $250 per class from an article written before 2025, writes the description in their own words, and is surprised by both the base fee and the custom wording surcharge. Nothing went wrong with the application - the guidance was simply out of date.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ACTUALLY ASK

About teas

Are TEAS Plus and TEAS Standard still available?

No. Those tiers were retired in January 2025 and replaced by one base fee plus surcharges.

What does it cost to file now?

$350 per class in government fees, with surcharges for custom wording, missing information and very long descriptions. Our fee is $199 flat on top.

Do I have to use the USPTO system myself?

No. Most applicants file through a service or an attorney, which is also how the application gets reviewed before it is submitted rather than after.
