USPTO STATUS 653

Your application is suspended

Official wording: Suspension letter — mailed

The examining attorney has paused your application, usually because something outside your control has to resolve first. There is normally nothing to respond to and no deadline running.

The most common reason is a prior pending application

If an earlier-filed application covers a similar mark, the examiner suspends yours until that one registers or dies. If it registers, you will likely receive a 2(d) refusal citing it. If it abandons, your application usually resumes and proceeds.

Suspension is waiting, not losing

It is not a refusal and it is not a rejection. It is also not indefinite: the USPTO reviews suspended files periodically and will restore your application to examination when the blocking issue resolves.

What you can usefully do meanwhile

Read the suspension letter to see exactly what is being waited on. If it names a prior application, its status is public in TSDR, and you can watch whether it registers or abandons. That single fact tells you what is likely to happen to yours.

Keep using the mark

Suspension does not affect your right to keep trading under the name, and continued use builds the evidence you may need later if the examiner does raise a refusal.

Confirm this against your own record

Status code descriptions are administered inside USPTO systems and published wording varies slightly between sources. Your file is the authority. Enter your serial number in TSDR to see your current status, every document filed, and any live deadline.
