USPTO STATUS 681

The pre-publication check is done

Official wording: PUBLICATION/ISSUE REVIEW COMPLETE

An internal review before publication has finished. This is an administrative milestone on the way to your mark appearing in the Official Gazette. Nothing is required from you.

This is a staging code

It records that the USPTO has completed its own checks on the record before it goes to print - that the mark, the owner details and the goods and services are in order for publication. It is not a decision about your rights and it is not a deadline.

What comes next

Publication for opposition, which shows as 686. Your mark appears in the Official Gazette and third parties get a window to oppose it or to request more time to decide whether to. That is the next stage where something can actually happen to your application.

Approved is still not registered

If you filed on an intent-to-use basis, publication does not lead straight to registration. It leads to a Notice of Allowance, after which you must prove actual use in commerce within the allowed period. Do not start using the ® symbol yet.

Worth doing now

Publication is the moment your mark becomes visible to competitors and to the watch services they pay for. If you are going to monitor for copycats, the weeks either side of publication are when it starts to matter.

Confirm this against your own record

Status code descriptions are administered inside USPTO systems and published wording varies slightly between sources. Your file is the authority. Enter your serial number in TSDR to see your current status, every document filed, and any live deadline.
