USPTO STATUS 686

Your mark has been published for opposition

Official wording: Published for opposition

The USPTO has published your mark in the Official Gazette. For thirty days, anyone who believes it would harm their own rights can formally oppose it.

A deadline may be running. Confirm the date on your own record before you do anything else.

This is good news with a waiting period

Publication means the examining attorney found no reason to refuse your mark. Most applications that reach this point are never opposed and go on to registration or to a notice of allowance.

The thirty-day window

The opposition period runs thirty days from the publication date. Third parties can also request extensions of that period, which is why the file can sit here longer than a month without anything being wrong.

What happens if someone opposes

An opposition starts a proceeding at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. It is litigation, not paperwork — with pleadings, evidence and deadlines — and it is a matter for a licensed attorney rather than a filing service.

This is the moment monitoring starts paying

Publication is also when competitors can see your mark. Watching for confusingly similar filings after publication is how owners catch imitators early rather than discovering them in a marketplace listing two years later.

Confirm this against your own record

Status code descriptions are administered inside USPTO systems and published wording varies slightly between sources. Your file is the authority. Enter your serial number in TSDR to see your current status, every document filed, and any live deadline.

Looking this up for a client rather than for your own mark? We keep a network of licensed attorneys who review the cases that come through us. It is case-by-case paid work and a free listing — never a referral fee or a cut of anything.

Nobody tells you when someone files close to your name

The USPTO does not police your mark. What costs owners their rights is a similar filing nobody saw.
