The registration has expired
Official wording: EXPIRED
The registration has reached the end of its term without being renewed. It is no longer in force, and the mark is no longer protected by federal registration.
Expired and cancelled are not quite the same thing
Expiry means the ten-year term ran out without a renewal being filed and accepted. Cancellation under Section 8 happens earlier in the life of a registration, when the fifth-to-sixth-year declaration is missed. The practical effect is the same - the registration is off the register - but the file reads differently and so does the history.
The grace period has gone
A renewal can be filed in the year before expiry, or in the six months after it with a surcharge. Once this code appears, both of those have passed. There is no late renewal and no reinstatement on these facts; the way back is a new application.
Your common-law rights may well survive
If you have continued using the mark in commerce, you probably still hold unregistered rights in your actual trading area. That is a real basis for refiling, and it is also a defence if somebody else tries to register the same name and claim you are the infringer.
The register is open to others now
An expired registration no longer blocks anyone. If the name still matters to your business, refiling is time-sensitive: someone else's new application can mature into a registration that later blocks yours, and the longer the gap, the more likely that is.
Read the file before deciding
Open the record in TSDR and check the dates and the correspondence. Whether a renewal was attempted, whether notices went to a stale address, and how long the mark has been off the register all affect how straightforward refiling will be.
Confirm this against your own record
Status code descriptions are administered inside USPTO systems and published wording varies slightly between sources. Your file is the authority. Enter your serial number in TSDR to see your current status, every document filed, and any live deadline.
